MIT Tech Protects Your WiFi Without Passwords

مرسلة بواسطة Unknown يوم الاثنين، 13 يونيو 2016 0 التعليقات
Researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratoryhave created Wi-Fi technology that identifies where you are, which may eliminate the need for passwords.
The system, called Chronos, can determine where a user is with an accuracy of "tens of centimeters," according to the research paper. This has various uses, such as telling Chronos not to allow people beyond the walls of your home or small business access to your network, called geo-fencing. You could build virtual walls that mimic your real ones.
Inside your house? No problem. Take one step outside your front door? No access.
By telling Chronos to block Wi-Fi access to users outside of a certain area, you can keep out hackers or people trying to piggyback on your network without the need for passwords. The researchers tested this in the epitome of a small business that relies on Wi-Fi, the coffee cafe, and found it to work with 97-percent accuracy. They tested home use also, finding that Chronos could identify four users and what rooms they were in with 94-percent accuracy.

How It Works

The exact method Chronos uses to accomplish this feat is interesting and a little involved. Roughly speaking, the system can judge how long it takes for a Wi-Fi signal to get to a device using it (called time of flight) with an error rate of 0.47 seconds. By calculating that and multiplying it by the speed of light, Chronos can determine both the angle (i.e., the cardinal direction) and the distance of the device relative to the router, giving it more or less exact coordinates. According to the researchers, this is 20 times more accurate than existing systems.
Researchers suggested other uses as well, such as coupling with smart home technology to automatically warm and cool, or turn on and off lights when you move into another room. They also demonstrated how Chronos can keep a drone within a certain distance of someone, so it could either follow you around or prevent itself from bumping into you.
Will hackers figure out a different way to get into your network? The paper is mum on the subject. Forging your time of flight seems more than difficult, but hacking networks may easily move into territory beyond breaking passwords.

This Wireless Beacon Lights Up Whenever You're Near a Speed Trap

مرسلة بواسطة Unknown يوم 0 التعليقات
Speeding tickets suck, and I don't know a single person that can tell me otherwise. But the reality is, most of us will break the speed limit for one reason for another, regardless of the pricey risk.
If you don't want a bulky radar detector (which only somewhat works), but want to go one step above what Waze offers, then take a look at TrapTap. It's a little gadget you stick on your dashboard (there's also an attachment for motorcycles) that uses blinking LEDs to alert you if you're approaching a speed trap, red light camera, or school zone.
I want so badly to say something snarky about the condescending pitchman in that video, but I'll hold off.
TrapTap works similarly to the reporting feature in Waze. The device wirelessly connects to your phone's GPS, and you just tap the button twice when you come upon a speed trap to set a beacon. Other users will see their device blink when they approach that point, indicating that it's time to slow down.
TrapTap blinks blue for police speed traps, red for red light cameras, and green for school zone reminders. Since radar detectors are legal in all states for personal vehicles, TrapTap could be more appealable to military personnel and drivers in commercial vehicles who have one too many tickets already, both of whom can't use radar detectors legally.
Image via TrapTap
TrapTap got around $290,000 US from 2,697 backers on its Kickstarter campaign, which was almost 3.5 times its original goal. If you still want to get in on the action, you can snag one from Indiegogo for $119, and it will hopefully begin shipping in August. Total amount raised so far is almost $360,000!
On the downside, the data is all (or mostly) user-reported, so TrapTap will really only be effective if there are other users in your area. Also, TrapTap's developers are saying that the gadget will improve road safety, but c'mon—TrapTap could empower already-bad drivers to become even worse.

This Easy Trick Frees Up Lots of Storage Space on Your iPhone

مرسلة بواسطة Unknown يوم 0 التعليقات
Clearing storage space is a constant concern for people with iPhones, especially since they don't come with expandable storage, limit the amount of free iCloud storage, and still, unfathomably, produce units with only 16 GB of space. Thankfully, Reddit user eavesdroppingyou shared this quick and easy tip you can use to wipe unnecessary files from your phone and potentially free up gigabytes worth of storage.
You can see the trick in action in this video from YouTuber iTwe4kz. And don't let the "one weird trick" garbage in the title sway you—we tested this method and it works. Really, really well.
All you have to do is open the iTunes Store and attempt to Rent a movie that has a larger file size than the amount of storage you have available on your phone.
You'll be shown an error message saying that there isn't enough space available to download the movie, and that you can manage your storage by entering the device's Settings. However, all you have to do is click onSettings or OK, and your iPhone will automatically remove some useless files, instantly giving you more space. You'll have to repeat this process a few times, but we ended freeing 3 GB of storage.
Let's go through the full procedure.
We started with an iPhone 6 Plus that only had 479 MB of internal storage available.
We used Creed for our demonstration, but again, you can use any movie with a file size that exceeds your available storage. Since there's no way of knowing exactly how much space you will open up, you might consider picking a long movie like Gone with the Wind or the extended cut of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Unfortunately, iTunes doesn't appear to carry Logistics, the longest movie ever made (clocking in at an unimaginable 857 hours).
When you click on Rent HD Movie, you'll be greeted with this error message saying that the movie can't be downloaded. Don't worry, you won't be charged anything for this.
Click on Settings instead of clicking OK, and you'll be taken to the Generalsettings; select Storage & iCloud Usage to see how much space you have. Just like that, we've gained 68 MB of cleared up space.
We repeated the process seven more times before it topped out, leaving us with a total of 3.5 GB of available space—3 GB more than we started with.
Depending on what kind of apps and files you have on your iPhone, you might have to perform this trick a different number of times—just keep doing it until you aren't clearing out any more space.
The storage space will remain available even if you reboot your phone. It's not exactly clear which files are being removed from your phone, but it's most likely the notorious "other" files that can hog your iPhone's storage.
You can skip to Step 9 in the link above if you want to see how to removesome of these files manually, and check out the other steps for more storage-freeing tips.

The HoloLens Can Make Mundane Tasks Like Hanging Pictures a Snap

مرسلة بواسطة Unknown يوم الأربعاء، 8 يونيو 2016 0 التعليقات
The HoloLens can do some pretty crazy things such as create a robot invasion in your walls, but it can also help you do simple stuff, like hanging frames, paintings, or anything else on those walls—after you repair them from the robot attack, of course.
Brick Simple made a very simple mixed reality app that you use with a stud finder, which you can see in action in the video above. Wearing the HoloLens, you use the stud finder like you would normally. When it finds a stud, you speak stud and the app marks the location holographically on the wall.
Once you've located the studs, just step back from the wall and they stick to their original position. This makes it easy to figure out exactly where you can hang things without marking up your house with a pencil—if your stud finder is fairly accurate, that is.
Given the unique beeps of most stud finders, the app could take this functionality to the next level by just listening for those noises and identifying the light indicator's location to automatically mark studs on the wall. It also wouldn't hurt to add a level. Nevertheless, it's an interesting example of how mixed reality devices can alleviate difficulty in even the most mundane of tasks.

T-Mobile Is Giving Away Free Stuff Every Tuesday

مرسلة بواسطة Unknown يوم 0 التعليقات
T-Mobile is going for broke. The carrier recently announced it will be giving away free stuff to its customers every Tuesday through a new app called T-Mobile Tuesdays for Android and iOS, and that's in addition to one share of stock and free in-flight Wi-Fi.
Image via T-Mobile
The app will give out "food, movie tickets, gift cards, subscriptions, ridesharing, and more," the announcement said. You just have to be the primary account holder and you're good to go. One person will win a huge prize every Tuesday, like a trip for two to Vegas or an expedition to Machu Picchu. And this will hopefully go on for a long time, since the giveaways will continue "until further notice."

The app is part of a new "Un-carrier 11" program that aims to just shower customers in cool free stuff. Beyond T-Mobile Tuesdays, they're giving away one share of T-Mobile stock to primary account holders (worth about $43 at the time of this writing) along with one free hour of in-flight Wi-Fi through GoGo, every time you fly.
Everything rolls out tomorrow, and if you're hungry for the stock, it's only available through June 21st. You can check out the terms for more details, and if you want even more freebies, we've got a good list of free stuff from carriers you should check out.

ModiFace Uses Augmented Reality to Fix Your Skin & Help Improve Your Looks

مرسلة بواسطة Unknown يوم 0 التعليقات
Augmented reality has a variety of applications, but lately the face has been a major point of concentration for many companies. We're all pretty familiar with face swapping by now, but ModiFace employs similar technologies for more practical purposes.

Say you want to change your haircolor but aren't sure if you'll like the results. Their technology can give you an incredibly realistic preview in an instant. Furthermore, you can sample various shades of lipstick and other makeup with just a tap. There's no need to actually put it on your face until you find the look you want.
While these applications are useful, well done, and pretty cool, they still fall into the somewhat superficial category. But ModiFace takes the possibilities further. It understands your skin, so it can detect potential problems and recommend treatments to improve your health. That's one more important addition to an already growing body of technology that seeks to improve the efficiency and efficacy of diagnostic healthcare tools.

Regardless of whether or not you have an interest in changing your appearance or checking your skin for issues, the implications here are huge. As hardware sensors become more capable and software can take advantage of those capabilities, we're quietly creating new ways for machines to understand the world around us. They may struggle to notice any significant difference between a North American wall outlet and a human face, but this is just the beginning.
ModiFace shows us one component of a smarter future that's here right now. Given how well much of this technology works right now, just imagine what we can expect in the years to come.
